Abstract:
This study is linked to the line of research Policies of Basic and Higher Education, and to the research group Observatory of Educational Policies, of the Postgraduate Program in Education, of the University of the Vale do Itajaí. Its object is the education of young people with intellectual disability (ID) in Youth and Adult Education (YAE). It takes the following question as its starting point: How does the education of young people with intellectual disabilities enrolled in the Youth and Adult Education modality occur? (and might could it occur?). The theory, meanwhile, was that the educational practices carried out in YAE are distanced from the experiences and future plans of young people with intellectual disabilities, but they can be redefined through collaborative experiences of conceptual elaboration. The general objective of the study was to analyze the educational process of young people with intellectual disabilities in the YAE modality, and the contributions of this process to learning and autonomy. The specific objectives were: a) to analyze the teachers' concepts of YAE and the Special Education Policy of Santa Catarina in the context of the Center for Youth and Adult Education (CEJA); b) to examine the teaching practices adopted in the remedial class, based on the strategies and mediations carried out; c) to identify the meanings of education in the YAE for young people with intellectual disabilities; and d) to construct collaborative pedagogical experiences of conceptual elaboration, as a possibility of re-signification of the education of young people with intellectual disabilities in the YAE. The research, which takes a qualitative and ethnographic approach, was conducted in two stages. The first involved field work, at the CEJA (Center for youth and Adult Education) of Vale do Itajaí, SC, to learn about the processes involved in the education of two young people with intellectual disabilities, which included the participation of the three teachers who work in the Remedial class group of the researched institution and two young people with IDs enrolled in this class. From a perspective of inclusion, and based on the content analysis of the field diary records, participant observation and semi-structured interviews, some reflections are offered on how the policies are translated in the context of the school; the relations that this translation establishes with the process of teaching and learning; the pedagogical practices that involve not only the two young people with DI, but the whole class; and the meanings of schooling in the YAE for young people with ID. The analyses in this phase were based on the studies of Ball, Maguire and Braun (2016), Sacristán (1995, 1997, 1999), Oliveira (2005, 2007, 2011), and Raitz (2003, 2009, 2014), among others. In this phase, YAE is revealed as a process immersed in conflicts and contradictions, as evidenced in the translation of the inclusion policy, which demonstrated the need for a commitment to overcoming the exclusive nature of Special Education in these times of inclusion. The culturally rooted practices in this modality raise the standardization of knowledge, solitary production, the formal execution of tasks, and a lack of collaboration. In light of the practices present in this modality, young people, in a wealth of contents, stated that in their education, they seek not only certification but also learning and preparation for the different scenarios of social life and work. Based on the reflections on pedagogical practices observed in the classroom, and on the meanings of education for young people with ID, the second stage of the research emerged, in partnership with the teachers who work in the class (the Regent Teacher, the Second Teacher and the Teacher of the Multifunctional Resource Room) collaborative pedagogical experiences of conceptual elaboration were built, based on the expectations of education of young people with ID. The construction was supported by the assumptions of the historical-cultural approach, specifically, by the constructs of Vygotsky (1997, 2007, 2008, 2010) and Luria (1986), which are closely related to learning, inclusion, collectivity, collaboration, experience and conceptual elaborations. In this stage, the filming done the classroom was submitted to microgenetic analysis. The results indicate that in an inclusive YAE, where everyone builds knowledge together, collaboration, experience and elaboration are essential elements. These elements have resized the YAE to the space where learning is taught; in a space where one learns by teaching; and in a space where one researches by learning, therefore teaching, in this modality, needs to be based on the comprehension of the subjects, on the recognition of identities, and on the valuation of the experiences, since the individuals in this modality are seeking, in keeping with the certification, a critical-reflexive training that involves training for the labor market, for the social and cultural reality, and for life.
