Abstract:
Due to the great increase in the demand for quality food, marine fish farming has been gaining ground. In order to maximize the production, dietary and nutritional protocols should be tested. So, with the purpose of elucidating some questions, two experiments were carried out. In the first experiment, was evaluated the influence of feed restriction on the performance of cobia juveniles. In total there were 18 glass aquariums (50 x 50 x 50 cm, 125 liters) in a recirculation system. In total there were 6 treatments, each with 3 aquariums and each aquarium with 6 fish (108 fish in total). The experimental units were distributed in a completely randomized design. Control fish (C) were fed to satiety 2x per day (9am and 4pm) throughout the experiment (45 days). The fish of the treatments submitted to food restriction were: 5 days (U5), 10 days (U10) and 15 days without food (U15) and after deprivation they were fed as the control ones until the end of the experiment. In the other two treatments, fish were subjected to the following restrictions: fish fed on alternate days (U1) and fish fed for 5 days and deprived of feed for 2 days (U2), throughout the whole experiment. At 15, 30 and 45 days of experiment all fish were weighed, measured and two animals from each repeated ones were sacrificed for liver removal. During the whole experiment no mortality was observed and at any stage of the experiment no compensatory gain was observed. In the biometry performed after 15 days of the beginning of the experiment, it was observed that the fish weight of the treatments U1, U2 and U5 were equal (P˂0,05) with U15 being the treatment with the most severe restriction, the worst treatment, which lasted until the end of the experiment. At the 30th day of collection, treatments U1, U2 and U5 were also the same. Another result observed was that the fish of the treatments U5, U10 and U15 presented a hyperphagia as soon as the feedback period began, in treatments U1 and U5 this behavior was routine. The liver of the animals showed no significant difference between treatments, all of which presented a high degree of degeneration. It was observed, therefore, that juveniles of cobia cannot suffer any type of food restriction: if that occurs, a decrease of their weight gain and growth will be observed and the animal will not be able to restore that loss. In the second experiment, the inclusion of the flour of the microalgae Schizochytrium sp. (MF) in the zootechnical performance of juvenile cobia. Four diets were produced, the first to be controlled (C) without addition of MF, followed by the feed two (R2) enriched with 2% of FA, diet three (R4) enriched with 4% of MF and fourth diet (R6) enriched with 6% of MF. The experiments were conducted in 12 circular polyethylene boxes (1,000 liters) in a continuous recirculation system. Each treatment had 3 replicates and each replicate had 19 fish. The experimental units were distributed in a completely randomized design. The fish were fed to satiety twice a day (9am and 4pm) throughout the experiment and the feed consumption was quantified. At the beginning of the experiment all fish were weighed and measured and every 10 days of feeding a biometry was performed with all the fish. At the end of the experiment 4 fish from each treatment were sacrificed for removal of the liver and its subsequent histological analysis. After 20 days, both treatments R4 and R6 already presented significant difference in weight gain, and R6 presented difference in length. This difference was being accentuated until at the end of the experiment all treatments with inclusion were superior to the control, with R4 and R6 being the animals that presented the best results. In addition to the growth, the two treatments with the highest levels of inclusion presented the best food conversions, surpassing too much the control. In all treatments livers had a high degree of degeneration. The addition of microalgae flour in the rations was extremely satisfactory, significantly improving the zootechnical performance of the animal, although it did not influence the fat levels of the liver. Taking into consideration the performance results it is recommended to use 4% or 6% inclusion of MF.
