Neste caso, as mudanças do fundo arenoso e o soterramento esporádico seriam limitantes.

Abstract:
The Amazonian continental shelf is a highly energetic environment, where the circulation is the result of combined and complex action of trade winds and associated waves and currents, tides, and the Amazon River plume (PRA). Recent studies have demonstrated the existence of an extensive mesophotic reef system in this region, despite supposedly adverse conditions. Occurring mainly at depths between 70 and 200 m, these reef systems differ from classical reef systems in several respects. The present study investigated the characteristics of the water column and the seabed that define this mesophotic reef environment and that would be controlling its occurrence. Three field campaigns were carried out, one in May/June 2017 (west, towards the PRA), a second campaign in April 2018 (central) and a third campaign during July 2019 (southeast), on the Maranhão continental shelf. Each campaign includes 9 to 13 stations with vertical profiling of temperature, salinity, pH, dissolved oxygen, turbidity and eventually chlorophyll-a, as well as bottom sediment sampling. The spacing between the stations was ~10 nautical miles. It was possible to observe a clear influence of the Amazon River plume (PRA) in the westernmost profile (2017) and in the central profile (2018), in terms of salinity and turbidity. Three water masses were identified: one related to the PRA dynamics (AP), tropical waters (TW) and the South Atlantic Central water (SACW). Sedimentological data showed that between the westernmost and the central profiles there are clear differences in mud and carbonate contents, indicating also the existence of a transitional zone between the two sectors (plume and non-plume area). In the southeastern profile carbonatic sediments prevail from ~60 km off the coast towards the shelf break at ~160 km, with siliciclastic sands close to the coastline. Using PCA, it was evident that carbonate contents are strongly bound to depth, and silicilastic sediments prevail near the coast and, therefore, in shallow waters. Turbidity is strongly correlated with mud content, average grain size and organic matter content. The sand amount and salinity correlates strongly with the (transverse) distance of the PRA. The integration of water column, bottom and meiofauna data show that in the central profile turbidity is not significant and light would not be the limiting factor, but mesophotic reefs do not fully occupy the potential depth range of its occurrence. In this case the alterations of the bottom and the eventual burial are limiting, instead. The results presented here further suggest that reefs in general (whether mesophotic or shallow water ones) have a tendency to expand to lower depths at the south and central profiles. In the southernmost profile, there was a clear prevalence of carbonatic sedimentation and the significant occurrence of rhodoliths and sponges at depths of ~30 m towards the shelf break. In the 20-30 m range, shallow water reefs appear to predominate as part of Parcel Manoel Luís. In this profile it was not observed the influence of the PRA (or any other river influence). In a correlation along the platform it is possible to identify a trend of expansion of mesophotic reefs and shallow water reefs from southeast to west, where the water column conditions were favorable, or at least not limiting. The scarce occurrence of consolidated substrates for shallow water reefs (e.g., scleratinid corals) or the high dynamics of the unconsolidated substrate for mesophotic reefs (e.g., rhodoliths and sponges) seem to be the limiters of this possible expansion. New dating definitively demonstrates that the mesophotic reef system is alive in the study area, and the meiofauna data presented here reinforce this statement, indicating a great species richness and adaptability, including a trend of expansion.
