Abstract:
Literature review and teaching experience have shown that the teaching of evolution of species faces much problems and that an evolutionary approach to biological concepts and themes is usually not given. It was argued that for a central role and articulator as the evolutionary theory, this articulation does not make it more difficult to understand the relationship between biological themes, natural phenomena and their causes and effects, as well as the formation of a vision of evolutionary world in which the processes of diversification of living beings and their relations of kinship are as perceived as the transformations of the body. It was also considered that the teaching of biology is influenced by three main bases: material base, normative base and pedagogical base. These bases are interrelated influencing the quality of biology teaching and show themselves in different ways, according to the context of teaching. Based on this, it was decided to investigate the teaching of biology in two public schools in Rio de Janeiro from very different contexts: one from the federal network and another from the state network. Action research was the methodology used because it would allow access to the reality of the school to both investigate and promote changes in the teaching of biology in community with the actors of the school, increasing the chances of achieving better results with the research. For this, it would be necessary to accompany the schools for a relatively long period of time. Considering this the theoretical references that supported the research were the theory of Social Representations and Organizational Culture. With the first, it was possible to capture students' perceptions and opinions about the school, the biology discipline and the contents of evolution so that the diagnosis of the teaching situation was made, the actions planned and the teaching innovations carried out. With the second, we studied the cultural, political and personal dimensions present in school organizations, and among their actors, who influenced school dynamics and routines and, therefore, teaching. The data showed that in the federal school teleological explanations and religious beliefs and human evolution were problematic aspects in the teaching of evolution. In state school religious beliefs, non-understanding aspects of the nature of science and human evolution were searched as points of difficulty in teaching and learning. From this diagnosis were implemented in collaboration with teachers experiences of innovation in teaching in both schools. The results showed that the innovation activities carried out in biology teaching were efficient, impacted on student representation and provided reflections with teachers about their pedagogical practices, curriculum and school. They also show the complexity of the organizations, tensions and conflicts present in these environments, in different degrees, both arising from external instances of the organization (as well as from public policies) and internal to it (such as student and teacher difficulties). Although difficulties of collective construction have been made present, it was observed in several situations that teachers and students want to participate and there are not always spaces or incentives for this. It was pointed out that the teaching of biology is not dissociated from such dynamics of organizational culture and it was concluded that only from an institutionalized collaborative work is it possible to make real changes in organizations. It was recommended that action research should be continued by the social actors of the schools. This should take place towards the construction of a school project, preferably expressed in its Political Pedagogical Plan, built not as a bureaucratic document, but rather in a participatory way, giving voice to the actors and including the cultural characteristics of the schools.
